The theme for this 6 week workshop is The Poem Sequence. Dear Poet: do you revisit the same material or style over and over and over? There’s nothing wrong with that—you’ve got yourself a POEM SEQUENCE! In this workshop our emphasis will be on supporting you in creating (or adding to and revising) your unique sequence.

For the first session: bring several copies of a poem-draft that you think fits (or, you'd like to fit) the course theme.

When: Wednesdays from 8-10pm

Where: Salem, MA

Tuition: $200 per 6 week session or $35 per class

The theme for this 6 week workshop is Changing History! Here's the thing: a poem will always contain an element of the author—even when the poem is fictitious, impressionistic, abstract, or etcetera; even when the poem re-writes history! In this workshop we will write “speculative poetry” which alters big and small moments in history—that is to say, in the history of humans and in the history of our selves. We will analyze and parse out HOW other poets have written successful speculative work and attempt our own versions of success in various prompts and homework assignments.

For the first session: bring several copies of a poem-draft that you think fits (or, you'd like to fit) the course theme.

The theme for this 6 week workshop is Impossible Love, Impossible Beauty. Sometimes it's easier to write about the ugly, the demented, the negative. Happy is hard! In this workshop we'll challenge ourselves to write about love and beauty in new and effective ways. In this session we will analyze unconventional poems of love and beauty--we will parse out HOW they succeed and attempt our own versions of success in various prompts and homework assignments.

The theme for this 6 week workshop is Revising Revision Strategies. Do you ever revise something to death? Or, do you loathe revision--feeling that once the pen leaves the page, or the printer ink dries, the poem SHALL NOT be messed with? In this session we will stretch ourselves and experiment with a multitude of revision stratagies; we will report back to each other the results each week; as well, we will use class time to generate a multitude of poems upon which to experiment.

For the first session: please bring several copies of a poem in need of revision; also, bring in another poet's poem that successfully accomplishes something (whether in language, image, line break, voice, vision, etcetera) that you are trying to accomplish in your workshop poem.

In this session we will try our hand at this “rough terrain,” which includes: humorous or light verse, elegies, poems about romance/love, poems about sex, Ars Poetica, and political poetry. We will look at the best way to frame or cast each of these topics. NOTE: this workshop is not for “beginner” poets.

For the first session: please bring several copies of a "humorous" poem for workshopping; also, bring in another poet's poem that successfully accomplishes something (whether in language, image, line break, voice, vision, etcetera) that you are trying to accomplish in your workshop poem.
