TEACHING EXPERIENCE

 

Lecturer, English Dept., Montserrat College of Art, Beverly MA, 9/09-present.  I teach courses in Humanities; duties include:  lecturing on ancient and modern literature in translation, facilitating group discussions and projects, including oral presentations. 

Lecturer, English Dept., Salem State College, Salem MA, 9/02-present.  I’ve taught Composition 101 and 102 courses, as well as World Literature and Creative Writing courses.  As well, I will be teaching an Interdisciplinary Studies course in Fall ’09 called “Infamous Rivalries”.  Composition course duties include:  teaching various expository essay formats including research essays; instructing students in peer review methods, drafting and revising; evaluating and responding to fiction and non-fiction texts, forming and expressing ideas of their own.  World Literature course duties include:  lecturing on ancient and modern literature in translation, facilitating group discussions and projects, including oral presentations.  Creative Writing course duties include: introductory level instruction in writing and revising poetry, fiction and screenwriting, as well as work-shopping and critical analysis. Interdisciplinary Studies course duties will include: designing an interdisciplinary course which serves to introduce freshmen to the expectations they will face in their academic career, mentoring students, facilitating group projects and class “field trips.”

Lecturer, English/Communications Dept., North Shore Community College, Lynn MA, 9/02-12/02.  I’ve taught non-credited Composition-prerequisite courses entitled “Communication Skills”.  Duties included:  instructing multi-cultural students of various ages in the basic composition of sentence structures, paragraphs, and various five-point-essay formats; instructing students in non-fiction and fiction analysis, as well as facilitating in-class group discussions and peer review sessions. 

Lecturer, English Dept., Vista College, Berkeley CA, 9/01-6/02.  I’ve taught college Composition and Literature to community college students of varying ages and abilities.  Some classes focused on Composition for returning students as part of the Peralta District’s specialized PACE program for working adults.  Duties included:  attending various PACE planning meetings regarding student performance and standardizing assessment tests etc., attending English Department meetings, facilitating group discussions in-class, instructing students in basic and advanced composition and literature analysis.

Teacher Intern, English/Poetry Dept., St. Mary’s College, Moraga CA, 1/00-6/00.  I provided pedagogical support to professors in undergraduate English courses specializing in poetry and poetics.  Duties included:  planning tri-weekly seminar topics, delivering lectures on a regular basis, evaluating students’ creative work, giving written and verbal feedback.

 

RELATED EXPERIENCE

 

Poetry Workshop Facilitator, Peabody Institute Library, Peabody MA, 9/09-10/09.  Duties include discussing other poet’s works, assigning prompts, and workshopping poetry drafts. I also take your work home each session to give it the kind of rumination and commentary that can't be gotten within the time limitations of a workshop setting.

Lecturer, Poetry Dept., The Parlor: a non-profit creative writing center, Salem MA, 2/09.  I’ve taught courses on “Sacred Poetry”; students discuss, analyze, write and workshop sacred poetry from around the world and from various time periods.

Co-director, Thursday’s Theatre of Words & Music, beginning 1/09.  Share monthly reading series hostess duties; choose fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction featured readers; Cornerstone Books, in Salem, MA.

Co-director, The Last Word, 5/07-8/08.  Share monthly reading series hostess duties; also, choose fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction featured readers; Monet’s Garden, in Beverly, MA.

Consultant, Salem Poetry Seminar, 5/07.  Assisted Prof. J.D. Scrimgeor in choosing participants for Salem State College’s annual summer seminar for collegiate poets in MA.; duties included:  reviewing a multitude of submissions and meeting with Prof. Scrimgeor and others to finalize the participant list.  

Publications Editor, Soundings East, 9/05-present.  Contributing Poetry Editor for Salem State College’s literary journal; duties include: assisting students in reviewing hundreds of submissions for publication, and assisting students in the arrangement of poetry selections.

Publications Editor, inTense, 2/00-6/00.  Contributing Poetry Editor for St. Mary’s graduate literary journal; duties included: reviewing hundreds of submissions for publication, and assisting in the arrangement of poetry selections.

Public Speaking, American Leadership Conferences, 2/00-6/02.  I gave speeches on an “as needed” basis at “call to action” conferences which brought together students, teachers, clergy and community leaders; topics included family planning, youth violence and AIDS related issues. 

Publications Editor, Transfer Magazine, 2/96-6-96. Contributing Poetry Editor for San Francisco State University’s undergrad literary magazine.  Duties included:  reviewing hundreds of submissions, assisting in the arrangement of poetry selections, choosing award finalists.
